On receipt of a return, follow steps 1 - 10 below

  1. Stamp the date of receipt on the front of the return. Note: Ensure that the stamp is well clear of the barcode to prevent problems with barcode reading

  2. Using function LOG RETURN enter the

* Return Batch Identifier ([SAM121065](https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/self-assessment-manual/sam121065))
* Date the return was received
* OUID in which you are working
* UTR of the taxpayer
* Year of the return to be logged – displayed as the current year
* Select the [Log Return] button. A message is displayed confirming logging of the individual return as successful; the taxpayer’s record is not updated until the batch is sent

Note: System Help. If any problem arises whilst using function LOG RETURN, refer to the system help available for the screen by selecting the Help menu option and selecting the Screen option.  
  1. Note the Return Batch Identifier prominently on the front of each return in the batch

  2. Deal with unsatisfactory returns. See subject ‘HMRC Netherton: Unsatisfactory Returns’ (SAM127080)

  3. Review any enclosures or attachments with the return. See subject ‘HMRC Netherton: Enclosures Or Attachments With Return’ (SAM127010)

  4. Deal with any payments received with the return. See subject ‘HMRC Netherton: Enclosures Or Attachments With Return’ (SAM127010)

  5. Update the taxpayer’s record with any change of address. See subject ‘HMRC Netherton: Taxpayer Address Changes’ (SAM127070)

  6. Deal with capital gains cases. See subject ‘HMRC Netherton: Return Indicates Capital Gains Form Completed’ (SAM127030)

  7. Deal with returns for years prior to CY-1. See subject ‘HMRC Netherton: Returns For Earlier Years’ (SAM127050)

  8. Where necessary, transfer the return to the responsible processing team or office

The return can be re-logged with other returns in the responsible team or office using the new date of receipt, as this will not overwrite the original date. The ‘new’ Return Batch Identifier will automatically overwrite the original identifier on the taxpayer record
