From HM Revenue & Customs · Life Assurance Manual

FA12/S172(2) provides that any expression other than “friendly society”, “incorporated friendly society”, “policy”, “registered branch” and “registered friendly society” which is used in FA12/PART3 and in FA12/PART2 has the same meaning in FA12/PART3 as it does in FA12/PART2.

This rule is modified by SI2012/3008/REG14, which adds the words “except where the context otherwise requires”.

For an example where the context does otherwise require see LAM17240.
