NMWM02140 | Roles and responsibilities: Court of Appeal (Northern Ireland)

In Northern Ireland appeals against the judgment of an Industrial Tribunal (NMWM02110) are made to the Court of Appeal (Northern Ireland).

The Court of Appeal sits at the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast. There are four judges of the Court of Appeal including the Lord Chief Justice, who is the President. The Court of Appeal hears appeals in Civil matters from the High Court and in criminal matters from the Crown Court. It also hears appeals on points of law from the county courts, magistrates’ courts and certain tribunals (including Industrial Tribunals). Three judges will usually hear a case in the Court of Appeal. The Court is administered by the Northern Ireland Court Service, which is answerable to Parliament through the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs.
