General

Apprentices (NMWM05230) aged over 19 and not within the first 12 months of their apprenticeship qualify for the national minimum wage at their respective age rate. See Rates (NMWM03010).

For example:

Worker E, aged 17 starts an apprenticeship with an employer in November 2010. Initially the worker is entitled to the National Minimum Wage apprentice rate because he is aged under 19 (NMWM05260). He will become entitled to the National Minimum Wage for his age group (NMWM03010) from his 19 birthday because, at that point, he will be aged over 19 and will also have been on his apprenticeship for more than 12 months.

For apprentices aged 19 and over and within the first 12 months see NMWM05270.
