There can be various reasons why the 'service documents' are not served. For example, where the defender has gone unknown or the premises were shut and no signature could be obtained for the recorded delivery letter (DMBM680560).

In each instance you will need to, where appropriate, request the sheriff officer to re-serve these documents either by ordinary post or personal service. The period of notice will not begin to run until the defender has been successfully cited (DMBM680090).
