If a contractor’s return is unsuitable for the Rapid Data Capture (RDC) scanning process, HMRC staff at Netherton will need to decide whether it can be made suitable or if they need to manually capture the return. In order for either option to happen, the Minimum Data Set (MDS) criteria need to be satisfied. These are detailed at CISR68640.

If there is no AO reference, follow the instructions at CISR68770. If the contractor’s return is damaged, indicating that scanning is not possible, but MDS is satisfied, follow the instructions at CISR68700 so that the return can be manually captured.

If the contractor’s return is in such a damaged state that manual capture of even MDS is not possible, the form, which will already be date stamped, should be forwarded to CIS Centre at Newcastle.
