For National Minimum Wage purposes there are no special rules in respect of hairdressers.

In 2004/05 the hairdressing sector was selected as an industry for education and targeted enforcement for compliance with National Minimum Wage legislation.

The targeted enforcement was assisted by the trade bodies the National Hairdressing Federation (NHF) and the Hairdressing And Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA). The Department for Business and Trade (NMWM02020) produced two publications, “The National Minimum Wage and the hairdressing sector” and “A short guide for the hairdressing sector”. These publications expanded on other guidance concerning trainees and apprentices and were issued via trade bodies, training providers and direct mailing to trainees and apprentices working in the hairdressing sector.

Some hairdressing businesses operate an arrangement based on renting a chair or space in a shop to a third party. In these circumstances, it is necessary to investigate the status (NMWM04000) of the third party to determine whether or not they are a worker (NMWM05020) for National Minimum Wage purposes.
